Work type: Full-time permanent contract. Monday - Friday and one Saturday a month. Daytime shifts

Reporting to: The Directors

The role: The Pie Man is looking for a creative cook/chef to take this much loved foodie destination into the future with enthusiasm and drive and a new vision. You will be ambitious with a passion for food. 

The Development Chef will primarily be working in the kitchen supporting the Cafe Chef with the development and delivery of the menus and recipes that are quality, fresh, sustainable and locally sourced. They will also be expected to work front of house at times – it is therefore important that the Development Chef is able to deliver a good standard of customer service.

This opportunity is ideally suited to early career chefs who are looking to learn on the job, explore their creativity and develop their craft.

 

Key tasks:

Kitchen:

  • Menu planning and full execution of menus / recipes
  • Assist in the operation and running of the kitchen.
  • Ensuring that the kitchen is fully compliant with all relevant legislation, health and safety and food hygiene
  • Delivering the menu to a high standard, including its presentation
  • Purchasing and stock control
  • Preparation of café and counters before, during and at end of service

Front of house:

On occasion, the Development Chef may be asked to deliver some front of house duties which include:

  • Serving customers to a high standard, ensuring the café is always a welcoming place
  • Taking payments accurately and securely
  • Preparing drinks including teas and coffees (training on the coffee machine will be provided), soft drinks
  • Giving advice, guidance and recommendations on products and menu selection to customers

We also ask that all The Pie Man staff contribute to social media, by either posting messages, or providing content e.g. images of food

Personal skills:

  • Experience of a professional kitchen / trained chef / willingness to learn where knowledge lacks
  • Love of food with a desire to progress in the food industry
  • Friendly and engaging personality, a good communicator and able to work under pressure
  • Comfortable working with members of the public, able to initiate conversations and provide a sincere welcome and enjoy providing a good service
  • Need to be willing to learn, take instruction and work under own initiative, supporting other team members and able to multitask
  • The Development Chef will be on their feet for most of the day, and will be required to lift and carry trays, pans and crockery, restocking shelfs etc.
  • An effective, well-organised and efficient team player with a strong sense of discipline and urgency
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn till operation and cash handling
  • Food hygiene training, or a willingness to get this qualification immediately
