Cook/ House Manager for gorgeous villa in Tuscany
Caroline Maude

We are looking for an enthusiastic cook to run our Tuscan villa rental season over the summer of 2024 from June to mid September. Our house is situated in the glorious rolling hills of the magical Maremma, an authentic, wild region of Southern Tuscany, midway between Pisa and Rome. We are lucky enough to live here in Autumn, Winter and Spring and then rent the house for the summer months whilst we go to Greece.

Whilst the job is mainly cooking for guests, other key responsibilities include managing the weekly or fortnightly changeover, overseeing our crack team of cleaners, and welcoming and showing guests around on arrival. You will also be responsible for watering the plants daily, feeding the cats and keeping an eye on the pool, ensuring the robot does its job and checking water and chemical levels, all of which is straightforward. You will also need to take the sheets to the laundry in Grosseto after each changeover. Inevitably other trouble shooting issues may come up (eg the water temporarily runs out) but we will always be on the end of the phone to support you and you will be given a list of friendly local tradesmen to call in for help. A basic level of Italian would be very helpful but not essential. Our cleaners are very friendly and happy to communicate through google translate.

Cooking duties will vary depending on the guests. Some like you to cook at least one meal a day, sometimes two, whilst others will only require you to cook once or twice during the week. So your work load will vary. But the quieter weeks are a terrific opportunity to explore this lovely region. The house sleeps maximum ten people so you will not usually be cooking for more than ten. You will be expected to liaise with the guests in advance to discuss their requirements and your menu proposals. Please note the house is already booked for 8 weeks this summer (all of June, 2 weeks in July and 2 weeks in August so far) and every guest has expressed great interest in having meals cooked for them. We expect to rent out 4 - 6 more weeks taking the season up to mid September.

We are enthusiastic cooks ourselves and you will find the kitchen in the house is very well equipped.

Accomodation is provided in a cottage in the garden, with a double bedroom, sitting room, small kitchen and terrace. A car is also at your disposal and a full driving license is essential as the house is fairly remote and you will need to drive into the nearest town (Grosseto, 20 minutes away) to shop for ingredients and other life support.

The style of cooking required is home style Mediterranean cooking with plenty of Italian influence plus lots of healthy and tasty salads (which Italians are not so hot on!) utilising the wonderful array of local produce. We will happily show you the best local producers, markets and supermarkets.  This is a great opportunity for someone recently trained at Ballymaloe (or elsewhere) to test and hone their menu planning and cookery skills in a beautiful and non pressurised environment.

Please do check out our website to get a fuller picture of the house, the set up and the lovely area.
